I think ironically some of the opponents to new housing often end up being local business owners who are unaware that unaffordable housing is choking off disposable income. The result is a difficult local business environment even in a place where homes sell for $1M+. It's the same "the house prices are saying people are rich, their spending is saying they're poor" problem.
